Wanna Trade?

I am trading this guitar I made for the bike that I painted on it (a 1972 Yamaha XS2-650). It’s in excellent condition, not running, …yet, but I am going to tear it down and build a custom bike out of this most excellent engine. Stay tuned to see the results. And yes, I said trade…still can’t believe it, what a deal.

The Art and Music of the Cigar Box Guitar

Southern CA’s premiere cigar box guitar blues band, The Budrows, is set to kick it up a notch on December 3rd when the trio hosts a CD release party and art show where fans can win a new custom made guitar. The Budrows feature the father/daughter combo of Jason Farthing and the young Argentine vocal phenom Macarena Rivera, accompanied by veteran flute and harpman Jesse Boden.  More artists and custom cigar box guitar builders including Bob Hoard, Josh Gayou and Cris Portillo will join Farthing in displaying custom cigar box guitars and artwork at the event.  A drawing for the guitar and other prizes and CDs will be held at 9pm to celebrate the release of The Budrows CD entitled “100% Foot Stompin’ Cigar Box Rock N’ Roll”.

The Budrows have been steadily expanding their southland following with an infectious foot-stompin’ (Farthing doubles on rhythm) brand of hill country blues. Vocalist Rivera lures audiences with her deep, exotic range, soulful instinct and stunning grace and presence well beyond her 18 years. The veteran chops of harpman Jesse Boden bring experience and the woodwind element to form a powerful and unique blues experience in the tradition of the American masters of the genre. Sure as molasses is slow, this band has the ability to transform any venue into a bonafide deep south juke joint, complete with a foot-stompin’, testifyin’ audience full of revelers having themselves a modern good time in an old fashioned style.

Off the grid…solar power at it’s best.

I haven’t posted in a while, but I just saw this quick video and found it very interesting. I love the simple ideas that people think of and make a reality…but more so the ideas that are born out of necessity are truly some of the greatest. Check it out.

Talk about free time.

Apparently some people in Oregon have a lot more time on their hands than they truly need. Maybe they could take up knitting or stamp collecting…or even Blogging. He’ll I don’t know, I guess it’s as good as anything else.

If Bigfoot falls in the woods and no one is there to hear him…does he truly exist?

Sleep on it.

The Devil’s got an axe to grind…

The Devil's PitchforkThe Devil's Pitchfork (full view)

They’ say that the Blues is the Devil’s Music,…I guess ‘they’ kind of say that about all genres of music when they were new, except for maybe Electronica…which in fact IS the Devil’s Music, if you can call it music, but I digress.
Check out this three string acoustic, perfect for strummin’ on the back porch and makin’ some blusey music. This of course would make the Devil happy.

Spanish…not just for ordering cervezas anymore.

I just designed this business card for April’s Spanish teaching that she does on the side. You better learn it, it’s taking over.

If you stick it, they will come.

I designed some stickers for The Budrows recently and ordered me up a thousand of ‘em. I just got ‘em yesterday and they look great. We will have these at our upcoming shows so you can stick ‘em where the sun don’t…….stick ‘em wherever you want.

Big thanks to Kevin at Social Imprints up in San Francisco, look ‘em up for all your printing needs.

800 some odd miles later…

I once did a 16 hour stretch of driving in one day, it was weird when I stopped to sleep, kind of like when you get off a boat and step on dry land and you are kind of wobbly…it felt like that. I just went up to Petaluma to see some bands and friends on Saturday night. I drove 8 hours up, was there for a total of 14 hours (including sleep) and drove 8 hours back…long day, but well worth it. The Phoenix theater brought back a lot of good memories and it was great to see all the people, kind of like a reunion of a music scene of a certain era. Good times with Cropduster, Jesse and the ceiling at Volpi’s Bar.

Music heals…

I just sent this guitar up to Nor-Cal to be part of a Benefit Concert for breast cancer. The event is called Music Heals Nichole and this custom cigar box guitar will be auctioned off along with a lot of other great stuff to help pay some medical bills for a good buddy’s wife. The show is tomorrow night at the Phoenix Theatre in Petaluma and there are five great bands playing…my favorite of which is Cropduster…hmmm, I thought those guys retired?
